About the Nursery
GPNPN currently operates a relatively small native plant nursery with over 50 species. We have many plants of some species and a few of others. All of our plants are locally sourced and propagated and therefore climate adapted. Most of the plants have proven worthy for the garden and the Redding climate, requiring fewer resources once established. However, to keep things interesting, we grow plants that few nurseries carry but should do well in our climate. Garden diversity is a lofty goal.
We take seriously nursery Best Management Practices (BMP), mainly because the water mold Phytophthora causes root and crown rot and can devastate landscapes. “Phytophthora disease is the number-one disease of nursery crops nationwide.” There are many aspects to BMPs, but our main concerns are sterilizing all used pots, keeping plants 30 inches off the ground, and sterilizing the soil. Currently we are solar soil sterilizing, but it is difficult. Since we would like a more user-friendly soil sterilizer, we added it to our “wish list.” All of these BMP practices are challenging and why noncompliance permeates the industry. We have found, however, that adhering to most of the BMPs prevents other diseases and results in a healthier plant that will flourish in your garden.
