Plants

These “Featured” native plants have matured and ready to relocate to the right place in a land steward’s cherished garden; a win-win-win situation.  The plant can finally jettison confined quarters, the wildlife will come, and the gardener has a great native plant that will provide much joy.

The reason they are in their prime is their roots are mature and wanting to spread out into the native soil.  Now is the beginning of a window where the days are shorter, the nights are cooler, and the warm, moist soil (irrigate if not consistently raining) invites the roots to seek out new soil microbiomes.  They still need water – do not let the root balls dry out – until the eventual fall rains arrive, which will offer us some amnesia of the previously hot summer.

Note:  The Featured list is in alphabetical order by botanical name.

California Sagebrush, Artemisia californica

One of my wife's favorite plant fragrances.

Woollypod Milkweed, Asclepias eriocarpa

Monarch mutual exploitation

Big Saltbush, Quail Bush, Atriplex lentiformis

Very important bird habitat plant in its natural range. Also attracts native bees and many butterfly species.

Western Redbud, Cercis occidentalis

Arguably one of the top three native plants for the Redding area.

Mountain Mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides

The seed plumes all summer are captivating

Desert Willow, Chilopsis linearis

Desert willows provide super pollinator habitat, especially for hummingbirds, during our hot, dry summers; an excellent replacement for the ecologically deficient oleanders.

Bladderpod, Cleomella arborea

Native to southern California but does great in Redding. Tough plant that tolerates some garden water, if excellent drainage, and infrequent summer irrigation. Native in harsh conditions.

California Fuchsia, Epilobium canum

A summer/fall bloomer with red trumpet flowers, a favorite for the resident hummingbirds.

Wayne Roderick seaside daisy, Erigeron 'WR'

This native daisy can bloom off and on all summer and is more tolerant of the Redding heat.

Leafy California Buckwheat, Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum

"If only one native plant you would try, this would be the one!” - Las Pilitas Native Plant Nursery

American Valley Sulphur Flower, Eriogonum umbellatum var. dumosum

This variety of Eriogonum umbellatum flourish in the Redding heat.

California Fescue, Festuca californica

A favorite of the carbon sequestrating hero native bunch grasses.
