Valley Oak, Quercus lobata

The largest of North American oaks. This mighty oak relies on a water table within reach of the roots in the hot interior Sacramento Valley.

Size: 60 - 100 ft tall, 50 ft wide

Form: Rounded, Upright, Vase-like

Growth Rate:  Fast, Moderate

Dormancy:  Winter Deciduous. Fall leaves turn a yellow to light orange

Flower Color:  Yellow, Cream, Green

Flowering Season:  Spring, Winter

Wildlife Supported: Oaks are very important to wildlife (keystone species) including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Many insects survive on Oaks. Deer resistant.

Moisture:  Low to moderate, best when roots tap groundwater

Soil Drainage:  Medium. Rich loam

Natural Habitat: California’s interior valley. Commonly associated trees are Coast Live Oak, Interior Live Oak, Blue oak, Black Walnut, California Sycamore and Ghost Pine.

Common Uses: Shade. Habitat.
